Tech Tip No. 3

On a more serious note this month, there is a growing security threat that everyone must know about.  This new one goes by many names including XP Antivirus 2008, XP Antivirus 2009, XPAntivirus and XP Antimalware 2009, XP Antispyware 2009.

This one is particularly nasty as it presents itself as a pop-up that says your antivirus subscription has expired and needs to be renewed.  When you click on the link you are taken to a very formal looking website where you enter your name, address and credit card information.  The you are given a file download to install.  Once you have done this you have done two things: a) given a "bad guy" your credit card information which he will use without your authorization and b) installed a virus software onto your computer that will scan and find fake results, all the while installing more bad software to make your life miserable.

The computer will seem fine at first but then it will just get slower and slower and have more and more trouble getting to the internet and then you will start having pop-ups all over the place.

This one is also very difficult to get cleaned off of a computer.  Not impossible but it is very persistent and hides in lots of places.

The developers have done a good job to convince you that it is legitimate including a control panel that will look very familiar as it looks like the XP Security Control Panel.
